Hello,
I'm an absolute beginner to Linux. I have downloaded and installed Backtrack 5 and have a problem with the screen brightness.
I have a laptop HP6735b with an ATI Radeon HD3200 graphics card.
From the menu where you choose the OS, and onwards, the screen is very dim and can hardly be read. The brightness FN keys on the key board do not work. In the Power Management settings the brightness slider is grey and cannot be adjusted. Strangely, when disconnecting the power lead there is a very slight increase in brightness, (as the default settings - Performance is maximum brightness and Powersave is around 60%) .
When connecting a second monitor to the VGA port as a clone, the brightness is normal on the second monitor.
I downloaded and installed the latest ATI driver "ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run" but it crashed and wouldn't reboot so I had to reinstall Backtrack.
Can anyone help please?
TIA
Andrew

What gives you the impression that I didn't look on Google before I posted? I searched for hours on Google without success.
I posted on this forum as a last resort before giving up.
You can't say that searching on Google gave you without success. You just have to search and search and search.
By the way, did you install it on vmware? If so, install Vmware Tools.
Thanks for the pointer. I'll try Vmware Tools.
Look at the keyboard and push the button that looks like a bright or dark asterisk. Yours should be around F2 and F3. Some might involve pushing the Fn key.
