Default backtrack shuts down while piping crunch to aircrack

    Hi all

I am using backtrack off a usb memory strick(live install made with unetbootin)with crunch 3.0 installed. when i try to pipe the output of crunch into aircrack with the following command it runs ok for about 2 mins at just over 1000 kps but then the system shuts down

    /pentest/passwords/crunch/crunch 8 8 | aircrack-ng -e ???????? -w - /pentest/wireless/aircrack-ng/handshake/wpa.cap

    Anyone have any ideas??

Also is there any way to stop crunch trying a combination with 3 of the same characters in a row? as this will vastly reduce my combinations

    Thanks for any help

    I have just started on the test wpa.cap file for testing ;

    Code:

    ./crunch 8 8 -t @@@@@@@@ -u | aircrack-ng -e test -w - /pentest/wireless/aircrack-ng/test/wpa.cap
Sofar running for a few minutes without any problems..

Try with the -u option, but doubt that will make any difference as you advise it is starting OK.

Overheating maybe ? Did you check your "vitals" as the crash happened ?
Running both KDE and GNOME BT5 flawlessly. Thank you !

The same thing happened to me but I can't remember if I was using aircrack or airolib at the time. But I have to say that I think comaX is right, the laptop was ridiculously hot so I put it down to overheating too. I raised it off the desk slightly and it worked ok again.

I have let crunch do its thing for close to an hour without any problems,
running KDE 32bit HDD install on a netbook (Samsung N110)

I must admit though, the netbook is warmer / hotter than it usually was.
    (with windows / BT4)

Don't think the shutting down issue is anything to do with the software,
    more likely as Comax suggested.
