Default General question - Desktop Activities (ALT+D,ALT+A)

Simple question; if you right click on the desktop there is pop-up menu wjere there is ACTIVITIES ALT+D,ALT+A option. What this Activities actually do and what this is for, (since it it grows on my computer do not know what rules govern this) ? Tried to find anything about that with no success. Could this 'function' be turned off?

    Any info welcomed

    Edit:

Find how to switch it off.
