Error during changing MAC address Backtrack 5

Hello

I am "new" to Backtrack and i have some problems with changing my mac address for networking and checking my own network.

1.

First of all, I want to know why I can't chage my mac address to for exapmle 00:00:00:00:00:00 or FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF.

By this command: macchanger --mac 00:00:00:00:00:00 wlan0

When i try to do this the error message is like this

ERROR: Can't change MAC: interface up or not permission: Cannot assign requested adress

But the interface is down (I know that sure)

2.

Now, I wan't to change my mac address to 01:00:5E:00:00:01.

By the same command and i get the same error message.

But if I change it to 00:00:00:00:00:01 --> than is their no problem.

So if anyone can help me by this questions, plz let me know.

PS: The network card is an Alfa Awus 036H - Backtrack 5 KDE 32bit - VmWare fusion 3.1.2 - Macbook Pro 15" (medio 2010)

Well I know any broadcast packet (a packet stating to every wireless device "Hey! I'm a wireless AP! Heres my info!) from any wireless access point has the MAC address of FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF. So for lack of understanding and a better definition on my part, being able to change your MAC address to FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF would make anything you tried to do afterwards go bonkers.

2.

But if I change it to 00:00:00:00:00:01 --> than is their no problem.

So if anyone can help me by this questions, plz let me know.

I think this problem could possibly be because of some type of "class" conflict. I have absolutely no clue though, just a guess.

I know you can't choose ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff because it's the broadcast address and you can't choose 00:00:00:00:00:00 because it's reserved for devices with no configured mac address (or so I understand), but I'm not sure why you cannot change it to 01:00:5e:00:00:01. I tried it out just to see and I can change it with no problem.

Try to bring down the iface, in your case it would be wlan0..
Ifconfig wlan0 down
macchanger -m xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx wlan0
ifconfig wlan0 up
Check it with ifconfig: ifconfig wlan0

But why can't I choose the MAC adress of an existing client? (the mac adress that I posted early).

That is so weird.

I checked it with some other Mac adresses.

And i can't even take 11:11:11:11:11:11 - 01:01:01:01:01:01 - 01:01:01:01:01:02


Is this a backtrack problem or is my Alfa network card broken?

Some network topologies provide unique multicast addresses at the MAC layer. These Layer 2 addresses can be mapped to Class D IP addresses. For instance, Ethernet offers a variety of multicast group addresses ranging from "01:00:5e:00:00:00" to "01:00:5e:7f:ff: ff." These addresses can be mapped to the Class D addresses, so that any traffic for "01:00:5e:00:00:01" is destined for the Class D address of "224.0.0.1."



That explains some things but not all, I still can't spoof to some MAC adresses.

Try using 00:11:22:33:44:55 It works for me doing the exact same thing your doing


and just an idea try quitting out of everything that could be connected to a network or the internet

Go with what nooby said plus you need to take down the interface before issuing this command for it to update.
