HELP ME! startx gets black screen after intalled NVIDIA driver.

I've been tossing the Graphics issue for a week! The problem is that the forum has never been seen.I hope we can actively help me!

My computer configuration：
ASUS A53XI241SV laptop
CPU intel core i5 2410M

Graphics：

intel Integrated graphics and NVIDIA GET540M

here is my VGAS:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Sandy Bridge Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 0df4 (rev a1)

I'm install BT5 KDE 32 on my laptop with dunal boot(boot with windows7)
When i installed NVIDIA driver and startx ,The xorg gets black screen: No check pattern in the background and no mouse cursor; the display's backlight is on. It simply does nothing and doesn't respond to Ctrl+Alt+Del. And there's no unusual error messages in Xorg.0.log.

Have you prepared your kernel sources? If not it is posted on the new wiki as well as the and in the Backtrack 5 How-To thread. Hope that helps. You should also take a look at your nvidia-installer log file it should be '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'.

I am not superb with Xorg confs, but I noticed in your log it is showing:

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 00@00:02:0

Which is the Sandy bridge GPU.

I could not find much information on the laptop in English, so I am not entirely sure what direction to point you in. If you have a function key combination to change the view port, you could try that. Or hook a monitor to the external display port.

Just means it I think is trying to use the sandy bridge GPU as primary device. I cannot be sure - as I have a sandy bridge CPU, but not a motherboard chipset to support the GPU. Ill check it out on the machine shortly just in case to see what it shows anyways.

If u follow instruct on BT forum all shoud be fine. When u close to end install, he ask u to automatic update you Xorg.conf file, answer it with yes. I mean he ask me so at end all be fine.

Im having the same problem with my macbook pro 7.1, which also has double graphic cards (Intel Graphics/Nvidia).

Have been looking for a solution to this for a while now.

i hit yes when it asked me to update my x file
and i did the kernel source stuff before install

why is lunix so crappy?

Ok..According to the Xorg.0.log, the nvidia driver being loaded by the kernel is ver 270.41.06...I found no errors reported in the log, just warnings...
It seems to me like you need to upgrade or install new nvidia driver for your model, nvidia GT540M, which is a GeForce for laptops...
Download the driver and Install the new driver:
http://www.geforce.com/drivers
Yours is the GeForce----500 M Series (Notebooks)----GeForce GT 540M-----Linux (32 or 64 bits)
This will give you the driver with the next info:

As you can see, the release date is Apr 11, 2012.....Try it and see if it works....

I do not know if you updated to kernel 3.2.6, but perhaps this version of nvidia is for new kernels...

Try it....

It is important to uninstall previous version of nvidia installed...Download the linux headers before installing the new driver...You might need them.
