Maybe this can help: http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forum...m-respond.html

Backtrack 5 No Sound Fix(Gnome)
After a fresh install of a Backtrack 5, you may want some sound. Unfortunately, you may encounter Error
This is a result of the PulseAudio Daemon not having been started properly at boot(or not at all).
To fix this, simply go to System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications and select "Add".
Set the command as:
"/usr/bin/pulseaudio" (use without colons)
and then set the name and comment to anything you'd like, it doesn't particularly matter. For organization's sake, I named mine "PulseAudio D".
That's it. Reboot, open the sound panel, and you can freely adjust your sound.
