HP DV7 - ATI HD 5650 startx issue (Black screen)

Hi

I install backtrack 5 on my hard disc an I have starnge issue.

firt on boot, I have black screen, don't see terminal, but i made startx to have graphique mode and i install backtrack on my hard disk.

I install it without any probleme but on firt boot i have blackscreen with startx

firt I think it's driver issue, I install ATI driver

wget http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run
sh ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run

but still not working......

any suggestion about this ?

I got the same problem when I try to use the proprietary ATI driver...
I'm now using the xorg.conf.failsafe, so I can not use the full resolution of my display
You could uninstall fglrx and then do the following command:

cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe /etc/X11/xorg.conf

It worked for me.

chmod +x ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run
./ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run

Follow the installer wizard.
reboot

when it comes back up run the following from the console:

aticonfig --initial

then run:

startx

Should come up fine after that using the ATI driver.

yea im having the same problem i tried bt5 gnome 32bit on my dv7 and nv53 bith with ati graphics and its just not working

Here's another thing to try:

edit your grub boot parameters and add

radeon.modeset=0

to the end of your linux boot line. If this is the same issue that I'm seeing on Ubuntu's Natty (11.04), it's a race-condition in the driver for handling run-time switching of the graphics cards.

If you have a intel HD Graphics. tried change the line "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=text splash nomodeset vga=791" to "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=text splash nomodeset to i915.modeset=1" of the /etc/default/grub file.

it's work for me.

i have ASUS laptop with intel HD graphics and Nvidia GT 540M. it's fix my problem in that black screen after install nvidia driver.

and, if its ati video, change it to radeon.modeset=0 as per my white screen of death fix in the fixes section.

Same problem here but my video car is ATI HD5450 and i can't install the BT5 because when i type startx on the prompt i get the black screen...
