Wireless: Alfa AWUS051NH

alittle help needed. I installed compat-wireless so i can use my new card(awus051nh) to work with tools like reaver. but i don't think i'm doing something right. I still see my old drivers loaded when I use airmon-ng and now I can only connect to the internet with my alfa card, and now my on board network card can't connect. help please!!!

I constantly have problems with compat-wireless, so can feel your pain. As a first step, cd to the directory you did the make, and then try

make uninstall

This should at least get your original onboard driver back.

You could then try compat again, but use the driver script to only install the relevant driver, not the entire package. I find the "wlunload" command leads to trouble; reboot instead.

Thanks so much. How can you tell if compat-wireless drivers are loaded? I use the script and use the lshw command but really can't tell if its the compat driver. It still says rt2800usb driver/driverversion=2.6.39.4, same as before the install???

Try

modprobe -l drivername

If the path starts with "updates", you're using compat-wireless; if "kernel", you have the original kernel driver.

I use the script and its still using the kernal, I'm I suppose to blacklist the driver? If so what are the commands?

You have rebooted? Reloaded the driver (rmmod, modprobe)? Pehaps remove and re-install compat (completely, from the start with a new makefile), watching very carefully for error messages? Does the "update" directory exist, with the new driver in it?

I have done everything except reinstall compat-wireless cause its kinda working for now. At first none of the reaver or aircrack tools were working with the original drivers, now they are. I'm not sure if the compat drivers are loaded somehow cause its still saying kernal...but its working!

I don't think too many people are using this card yet. Perhaps at some point you could post your impressions of it?

well from what I can see so far, the awus051nh is better then awus036h in many ways but one. its not as good at picking up AP's signal strength. But using it to connect to the internet is much better, sending and receiving data over softAP's you create is faster as well. Ive now had both and i'm never going back to the awus036h. just a girls opinion!!! lol

Works in BT5R2-GNOME-VM-32-x86 on WinXP with VMWarePlayer 4, didn't have to fiddle with drivers at all. Haven't tested x64 as that VM doesn't work for me.

No luck with injecting on channel 13 though!
