Wireless: Alfa AWUS051NH

Again, sorry for the late reply. I bought the AWUS051NH because it supports both 2.4 and 5GHz. I needed it for my windows box and was blessed with it also working very well in a straight HDD install and a VMWare install of BT5. In VMWare it seems to drop after a while. I think that is a VMWare issue though since it works fine in the HDD install. I have not tested under BT5 R1 yet. Working on that.

VMWare Workstation 7 on a Windows 7 box seems to have broken the AWUS051NH for BT5 R1. Haven't done much but a basic install and kill the dhcp process that airmon says is running on the dev. This is true for both 32 and 64 bit version. Not much time to play these days. There is a suggestion that we download the most recent drivers from compat-wireless. Directions on the wiki site.

So guys, does the AWUS051NH work or not straight out of the box ?

It certainly works for BT5 KDE 32 bit. I have used it extensivly. I could not get 64 bit BT5 to work at all so did not test that.

I can also say that the AWUS051NH does work, with injection, out of the box, in BT5 R1 KDE 32 bit in VMWare 7 on Windows 7. I would assume this also means this version of BT and the AWUS051NH will work under other installs as well as I think VMWare is probably the most difficult.

My previous post indicates it was broken. It is not, works great and seems to be working better in VMWare. Both BT and VMWare have been updated.

This maybe sounds weird, but I just received my new AWUS051NH, but when I go in airmon-ng I see he has this chipset: RT2870/3070 ? Which chipset do you guys get from the AWUS051NH or are there different versions ? Anyways it does support packet injections so I'm happy, I was just expecting a whole other chipset...(RT2770 RT2750)

Or did the seller gave me the wrong adapter ?

^ im asking myself the same question... i think ill get the AWUS051NH, since is the most recent... but not sure is the other ones are better or not... right now i have a linksys WUSB54G version 4, and i want to try the alfa now.

I am partial to the 51NH because it does both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz in all bands a/b/g/n. This is important to me. If you only need 2.4Ghz, maybe the 36NH would work for you. If you don't need n then maybe the 36H will work for you. I needed as much flexibility as I could get and I get that with the 51NH.

I think if I were you that I'd avoid the awus036nh. I have read far too many negative reviews on it. Like it constantly drops signal. I have been debating on getting the awus051nh but I decided that I really didn't need a/5ghz as most waps are g/n now a days. I know that the awus036h is practically legendary so that is probably what I am going to order. The only thing I'll miss is the N capabilities but I already have 2 cards with those capabilities. I'm probably ordering the 6 pack kit off of rokland/ebay since it comes with basically everything that I wanted. The panel antenna, the magnet base, and the awus036nh. I could care less about the 9dBi antenna because I heard that one is basically a joke. I looked at buying the magbase separately but it was going to cost more so I'll just buy the combo.
