@cozwara I am looking for a "run chrome as root" solution too. I am using the beta version so far, that will work.

Hi guys sorry total noob here ive just recently installed bt5 to my hd and used "sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc" to download and install vlc but when ive tryed to open it wont run.
    Im using bt5 knome 32bit.

Im not totally sure on where to start to adjust this code ive probably over looked something and i am a total newby at this so any pointers in the right direction would be sweet, Cheers People.

    Edit:

well im a dumb ass lol im using the kde version of bt5 and vlc still wouldnt work so i have been reading a few other posts on the net with the same problems all suggesting the same fix.
My only question is why are people saying its not safe to run vlc as root?
My apologies for hijacking your thread it would just be nice to know.

    Thanks

Personally I think its just easier to compile it from source, but whatever floats your boat.

I posted a chromium browser workaround in the Fixes forum for those looking for it.

First install from vlc from the repo's.

Use a hex editor to edit /usr/bin/vlc
    Look for
    Code:
    geteuid._libc_start_man
    and change it into

    Code:
    getppid._libc_start_man
Save and you are done. It works perfectly on my BT5 G32.

PS: Since this has little to do with pentesting I posted it in General forum. Move if necessary.
so what or where do you find this hex editor, or do you need to download it.???????

You can find it easily in the repo's. Just use synaptic... "ghex" for example...

    hexedit /usr/bin/vlc
    <tab>
    down arrow to getuuid
    change value to getppid
    cntl x
    save changes

Wow I.always run it as root, but then again I just use box to watch stuff while programs work, and I #omg store anything special on BT5 and reinstall every other month.
