NVIDIA driver install - Error: Unable to find the kernel source tree......

that should get you back into xorg did you use the commands in my last post

what nvidia card do you have ???

im using nvidia gtx580's x2
also using gts250 on an victim machine and both are running smooth with cuda

Yah！i'm use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and startx the error still!!
my card is nVidia GT540M
when i use lspci | grep VGA there are two:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Sandy Bridge Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 0df4 (rev a1)

i don't know why can't see the Product Series in my computer!

first:

cd ~/.kde/cache-root && rm icon-cache.kcache plasma_theme_Volatile.kcache
cd ~/.kde/cache-bt && rm icon-cache.kcache plasma_theme_Volatile.kcache

and then:

apt-get install libssl-dev linux-headers-2.6.38

Go here http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-toolkit-40 and grab these 2 files
"Developer Drivers for Linux (270.40)" and "CUDA Toolkit for Ubuntu Linux 10.10"

chmod them and throw them in the /tmp.

and then:

./devdriver_4.0_linux_64_270.40.run --kernel-source-path /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38

and then:

./cudatoolkit_4.0.13_linux_32_ubuntu10.10.run

and then:

python-switcher --python27

at last:

svn checkout http://pyrit.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ pyrit

reboot.

But when i startx the error still.(No devices detected.)

is this the driver you installed
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-270.41.06.run

don't worry about cuda that has nothing to do with why the card is not being recognized
you only need to install cuda when your card is up and running otherwise its pointless

Ive been searching the web trying to help you get this problem sorted Ive come across some bugs with Xorg and that driver was meant to have fix it

you have two cards sandybridge optiums I think you can turn one off in the bios as far as I can remember

Hi, i've successfully installed the driver from nvidia, then with the driver's shipped utility i've set the resolution of the desktop and saved the config.
When i reboot, the resolution is set to 640x480 instead of my desidered res.
Any idea why the res is always reset to 640x480?

if you are using kde remember to go into setting and make sure that it is not reload the last saved configuration basically a preloaded desktop
when you set the desktop res does it stay what you what it at until you reboot??

when you install the graphics driver when you logout and logback in the driver should be loaded

whats the make and model of your card????

I had the same error on my Acer when trying to install the NVIDIA drivers. However, for me, i just had forgotten to make:

prepare-kernel-sources
cd /usr/src/linux
cp -rf include/generated/* include/linux/

it's a nvidia gtx280, i've killed gdm, installed the driver from nvidia,restarted gdm,set resolution (and saved to xorg), rebooted....then the res become 640x800 instead of my 1024x768.

Hi,
Here is the best solution for you ( tested and running on HP G70, Gforce 9200M , Backtrack 5 Gnome 32bit).

Open terminal and paste: add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
*** The system will ask you to if you want to install " add " say Y.
Make sure the ppa is installed, re-paste the above command if necessary.

Again in the terminal : apt-get update && apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-current-modaliases nvidia-settings

*** Reboot

Again in the terminal paste : nvidia-xconfig

*** Reboot again and you're good to go.

Ps: you might want to fix the grub, do it this way; nano /etc/default/grub
Scroll down to : #GRUB_GFXMODE=640×480
Uncomment # ( take # off the script. like this : GRUB_GFXMODE=640×480)
Set you screen resolution according to your screen, mine is 1440x900 !
Now hit : CTRL+o to overwrite >>Enter, CTRL + x to save and exit.
Now in terminal : update-grub
