What is your BT setup? hdd install, usb, vmware, virtualbox.
Also, if you are not familiar with any of this, then Backtrack is not a distribution for you.
I can't get any wireless network to show up on my Konsole and on Wicd Network Manager. BTW, I'm very new to Backtrack, I am not familiar with any of it. So if I ask a stupid question, sorry.
I followed this guide first. I followed it because I have a similar network card. Atheros Ar9285, the guide didn't help me.
In Wicd Network Manager > Preferences > I changed the Wireless Interface to wlan0.
I opened up Konsole and type it "airmon-ng" and nothing shows under Interface.
Can anyone help?

WICD is the most frustrating piece of software on backtrack and one of the reasons people want to try and use a different distribution. hopefully with the new version of backtrack coming out based on ubuntu 10.4 this will fix a lot of the problems with wireless connections.
It is basically very buggy software and if running on VM try connecting and disconnecting your USB adapter.
Sometimes you will have no option but to reboot.
then don't use it! linux user's should be able to connect to an AP using console commands its actually quite easy if you know the mac address of your ap or at least the ssid. where it becomes really helpful is if you are in a location with multiple A's with the same name. you lucky you get wicd, i remember back in bt2 all i used was the command line

First of all, I have personally experienced a difference using vmware and straight linux live. The difference for me was huge! vmware operated somewhat but I did not have the same success as I do with BackTrack Live. So there is a difference. If you have started your network, and if you have nothing registering under airmon-ng, it can be a nightmare and you can spend hours wasting your time trying to mkdir's and updating. It is damn frustrating. The best thing to do in my opinion, is get a compatible working interface, usb wifi or whatever so that you wont have to spend hours pulling your hair out. Linux can be very frustrating for new people.
You shouldn't spend hours wondering why your internal wireless card is not working from Vmware. That's written in the wiki.
I agree. VMware is too unreliable IMO. I just installed BT in a dual boot and though it's still a bit hairy, I know that's just due to my lack of Linux knowledge and that the problem is not how a Windows app that is running a Linux distro is behaving, that's just too many possible variables to waste time trouble shooting.
refresh first....
wicd stop
ifconfig wlan0 down
ifconfig wlan0 up
wicd start
If you are using vmware to run BT3/4 on WIN7...you might get this problem...even if booting from a CD/DVD!!!
Solution: boot BT4 from a DVD and use hard drive partition for win and BT OS's; That should solve the problem.
