Default Airmon-ng not showing monitor mode on my wireless card

    Hi,

I am trying to start my wireless lan card in monitor mode but not able to do so. I am getting following output -->

    PID Name
    8552 dhclient
Process with PID 8552 (dhclient) is running on interface eth1

    Interface Chipset Driver

eth1 Broadcom wl (monitor mode enabled)

when I try to check the monitor mode after this command its not set to monitor mode, its set on managed. I further dig down the case and found that I have Broadcom 4313 driver installed in my HP laptop under windows. When I further investigated I came to know that injection mode is not supported on my laptop.

Are my observations correct. And if not please guide me how to start monitor mode on my laptop.

    Thanks.

the broadcom 4313 with the wl driver is not injection or monitor mode capable. this is the card that i have in my netbook and i was unable to set it to monitor mode.

generally you should be able to do airmon-ng start <interface>. There is a second method that uses iconfig. I believe that the command is ifconfig <interface> mode monitor.

iwconfig mode monitor should work too, try to kill the instance of dhclient if its running on the same interface, use kill "enter PID name from above" or type ps for a list of processes. Sometimes an integrated wireless chipset cannot be set to monitor mode, then just use a usb dongle, just research before you get one. Your lucky i had to use a orinoco card back in my cracking days and the driver patches for it were buggy as hell.

I had the same problem with my old card, so I did a little research and found a card in my budget that works at a very close range. The new card is an Intel 4965 and only shows APs within about 50' (+/-). I am looking to find yet another more powerful wifi card that can perform injection and monitor mode, but for now I'm stuck with the Alfa USB dongle.

Alfa AWUS 036H is about $30
Intel 4965 A/B/G/N is only $15 on Amazon, but I ran into BIOS conflictions and had to locate a cracked BIOS on MDL to run it. Thankfully there are volunteers there willing to help. If you upgrade and your BIOS is whitelisted, I definitely suggest going to MDL and requesting a BIOS mod.
