hey i have a questiong about laptops. I havent found a post telling me exactly what i need. the main question is can i use my laptop to run bt. i can start the iso image on my live dvd. but when i airmon-ng and use my card's name it doesnt recognize it at all. and idk what exactly im doing wrong. should i use the MVware player instead? ive heard its glitchy though
i have a HD Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC and i have an internal hard drive and the iso image file of the backtrack 4 r2 will not identify my internal wireless card which is a Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter (sorry if i put too much information in, just trying to solve this). should i not use the bt i burned onto my dvd and use the VMware Virtual Player.
just trying to figure this out. any help would be awesome!!! ill work with u best i can. still getting the hang of bt.

ok well here it goes. startx works perfectly fine and when i try to put my card in monitor mode the device doesnt respond saying there is no such device. when networking and wicd are both started i try to go into the wicd and look at available networks.
i know my card works i just dont know why it wont work in the bt4. i need a dam number to call for this ****.

Does Backtrack recognize your card ? (lspci/lsusb)
What is the cards name ?

you have to physically install bt to your hard drive. when it does, a lot of hardware components are checked, and the appropriate drivers are installed then.
in order to use the airmon-ng command you have to first enable your internal card, probably by typing inthen type ifconfig wlan0 to make sure its up and working before issuing theCode:ifconfig wlan0 upif airmon-ng returns a statement saying that mon0 is active your done.Code:airmon-ng start wlan0
you should not use vmware because it renders all integrated wifi chipsets useless for injection. You have to use USB instead.

Just incase you do end up using bt on a virtual machine, you should be aware that you still will not be able to put your internal wifi card into monitor mode. You will need to get an external USB wireless adapter.
Your card works out of the box with bt. I have the same one.
Code:lspci |grep AR9285 02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01) iwconfig wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"box" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx Bit Rate=48 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality=36/70 Signal level=-74 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0That would be wlan0 in your case. For future reference "man iwconfig" "man lspci"i need a dam number to call for this ****.
This card works perfectly for both monitor mode/injection and regular surfing. The "Tx-Power=20 dBm" (100 mW) kind of stinks, though. For more range and an out the box card you should look at an Alfa AWUS036hn usb. It will work with the vmware/virtualbox images too.
Works with wicd, too.
Code:service wicd starthit P to set your preferences and enter interface name (wlan0)Code:wicd-curses
F10 to save
R to refresh scan
arrow down to your net
-> to configure F10 to save
<enter> to join
Works from the console, no x needed.
Good Luck and remember google is your friend.
