I've recently downloaded BT2.0 Final (Having previously used BT 1.0 and 2.0 Beta), however, so far I have had no luck in getting my wired LAN interface to work.
Using BT 1.0, and 2.0 Beta, entering:
# ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.5 netmask 255.255.255.0
# ifconfig eth0 up
has allowed me to successfully:
# ping 192.168.0.1
As one would expect.
Doing the same with BT 2.0 Final gives the following message when attempting the ping:
# ping 192.168.0.1
PING 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 192.168.0.5 icmp_seq=n Destination Host Unreachable

.

The results are identical to if there is no Ethernet cable attached, but there is, and the link is know to be working, because it works fine under BT 2.0 Beta.
This same error occurs whether I am using the HDD Installation or the Live CD.
Also, the other computer (In this case IP Address of 192.168.0.1) can not ping or make any other connection to the laptop running BT 2.0 Final, and WireShark running on 192.168.0.1 detects no packets from 192.168.0.5 (BT) and detects the ARP Requests from itself, but no ARP Replies from BT 2.0
ifconfig confirms that the interface is indeed up, and configured with the right IP Address / Subnet Mask, and shows the correct MAC Address, so it is not a matter of the NIC not being detected.
I am able to successfully ping the local interface ie:
#ping 192.168.0.5
I have talked with a couple of the IT teachers at TAFE (Educational Institution), but they have no idea what is going on.
Does anyone here have any idea what the problem might be???
(I will do my best to provide any other information people might need)
Some new Info I just got:
Have just run BT 2.0 Final (Live CD) on a TAFE computer, and successfully configured eth0 interface and pinged.
NIC on my laptop (Which I can't get to work) is a Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5788 Gigibit (rev 03) Ethernet card.
(Is it possible that this card isn't properly supported by BT 2.0 Final, whereas it was in 1.0 and Beta?)

have been playing around for the last 5 hours, and am now pretty convinced my problem is an IRQ conflict.
I noticed a message about "Disabling IRQ #10" during booting, further investigation revealed I have Sound, Monitor, and Ethernet Controller all opperating on IRQ #10.
A bit of searching led me to the "irqpoll" boot option, which seems to of solved what I thought was a totally different problem (No sound in BT 2.0 Final), that I didn't really care about. Thought it might of resolved the Ethernet problem too, but no such luck![]()
Will try and get the ifconfig -a & relevent dmesg output for you.

Having spent a week and a half playing with different boot options, including apic=off, noapic, nolapic, irqpoll, acpi=off, and others, (As I'm using an Acer TravelMate, which it seems are notorious for APIC problems), I've finally solved my problem with my Ethernet connection, and will put it here for any others that have had the same problem (I notice at least one other has had the same thing happening).
The boot option "pnpbios=off" is all that seems to of been required.
And not only does it resolve my Ethernet problem, it also seems to of fixed a number of problems which I knew about (But didn't worry me), and some I didn't even know about.
Using the pnpbios=off:
- Ethernet connection works perfectly.
- Sound works
- Kismet loads correctly
- I now have my battery power monitor working
- The laptop now fully powers off when I use the #poweroff command (Previously the system fully halted, but I still had to press the power button to turn it off).
And there could even be other things that work properly now that I haven't yet discovered.
This fix works with either the LiveCD ==> Boot: bt pnpbios=off
And for Hard Disk Install by adding line ==> append ="pnpbios=off" to /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo to install the change.
Hope this works for any others having the same problem.

for those of you who have the intel NIC, a quick fix would be to do this
