Yup, a better description would help... and did you check the forum before posting?
I get the feeling im making a noobie mistake but when I start backtrack 4 r2 from my live USB when the screen comes up, it does not prompt me for a login, it goes though all of the checks and starting stuff but then just gives me root@bt:"#. When I try starting the login and enter user: root PW: toor it tells me invalid user name and PW, when I try startx it gives me critical error unable to launch. (sorry for the bad description im new to this stuff)

Running both KDE and GNOME BT5 flawlessly. Thank you !
root@bt:"#. < That although not entirely correct is the actual prompt so there is no need to try and log in since you are already logged it.
It might be a good idea to use some other version of Linux. Perhaps Ubuntu. BackTrack requires linux knowledge that you obviously do not yet have.
To be successful here you should read all of the following.
