Well is it just the fonts or is it the entire resolution?

I ran into something similar, I don't think it was as large as you are describing but my issue was resolved after I installed the proper video drivers for my video card.

"lspci" should give you an idea of what card you have if you aren't sure.

Try giving fix-vesa into the terminal before you type startx.

    Code:
    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Also give us the name of your graphic card.

I had same problem when using BT3 and later also during BT4 usage. In my case it was only problem in screen resolution. It didnt get resolved when changing resolution in X server (i mean during KDE session). This is how i solved that:
    1. change resolution and apply changes (in my case, everything still huge like shit)
    2. shut down X server and do dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    3. startx and it worked like a charm

Well just use your backup copy of the xorg.conf. I would also suggest checking your graphics card against the ubuntu forums and or google, to see if it is supported at all. Likely it is.
