Well Backtrack might not be the distro you want to use in order to learn Linux. All the tools are way too distracting at first. You also won't be really able to use them without understanding them.
I'd recommend to grab Ubuntu at first, get familiar with the basics, be able to find your way around the command line interface (CLI), how to edit files, how the filesystem works and so on. Once you feel comfortable with, go on and set up a Linux from Scratch in a VM. That will teach you a lot. When you are done with that come back and feel free to ask questions Sorry, but this is not a forum to explain on how to use the CLI for editing files or what or where the bash_rc or alike is.
