Sound And Monitor Problem

After I installed backtrack dual boot rc2, my sound volume is very soft and my laptop monitor switches off after 1 minute of inactivity.

I am able to hear sound and get graphics so it is definitely a configuration problem.

What I have done:
I have gone to settings> Sound & Multimedia > Sound System

but there seems to be no place for adjusting the sound volume.

How do I rectify my 2 problems?

kmix..... try harder. regarding the display shutting off I'm not sure. May be an issue with ACPI

kpowersave->scheme settings->specific display power management->power off after..........
