Default Live Disc does not eject [CAUSE IDENTIFIED]

In BT4 Final after log out the Live Disc does not eject (MD5 sum is OK).

After logging out of the desktop at the prompt I press Ctrl+Alt+Del. I see a few lines of text about processes terminating and then I see “Please remove the disc and close the tray if any then press Enter”. Problem is the disc did not eject, the tray button won’t open the tray and nothing I can do at this point will open it.

So then I press Enter and select “Boot the first Hard Disc” and press Enter again. The laptop reboots. After Windows 7 boots I still can’t open tray with the button and if I right click the drive in Windows Explorer and select Eject I see “An error occurred while ejecting ‘DVD RW Drive (D) BT4’”. At this point I can either use a papar clip to open the tray (after the drive stops spinning) or reboot and press the tray button as soon as the screen goes black.

I also found that if I hold down Shift after selecting “Boot the first Hard Disc” and keep it down until I see the WIN7 desktop the tray button works or I can eject the disc in Win Explorer.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5517. I encountered the same problem with my wife’s identical laptop and a Windows 98 PC so this is not a hardware problem. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Well have you tried any other live CD's ?
Usually after you press enter when the computer reboots you can remove the CD with no problem.

Try not using ctrl alt del, this is not the proper way for linux.
If you are running x (gui desktop) then use the log out button in the menu, then once you get to the terminal give poweroff or shutdown.
You could also try removing the disk as soon as you type poweroff.

I did use the log off button in the desktop.

After Poweroff I see: “Please remove the disc and close the tray if any then press Enter”. Problem is the disc did not eject, the tray button won’t open the tray and nothing I can do at this point will open it. After I power up I can press PauseBreak and eject the disc.

After Shutdown -h +1 I see: “The system is going down for halt in 1 minute”. Then I see: “Please remove the disc and close the tray if any then press Enter”. Problem is the disc did not eject, the tray button won’t open the tray and nothing I can do at this point will open it. After I power up I can press PauseBreak and eject the disc.

As you suggest I’m not using Alt+Ctrl+Del at the prompt.

You can not eject the disk only after you press "ENTER"

I do that and the tray still does not open. It makes no difference when I try to open the tray, either before or after pressing Enter, it will not open.

But the tray is supposed to open automatically so that I may remove the disc. After the tray is open and I have removed the disc then I would press Enter to make the PC reboot.

This happened to me aswell, however I improperly shut down the os and figured that maybe it was that the drive had some type of lock the os put on it, I dont know anything about the software that controls the cd roms but just a guess. Either way I restarted the computer logged in to the bt 4 r1 (or whatever live cd u using) and shut it down properly through the cmd prompt. I use init 0 or halt. then press enter and the cd should come out fine.
    Good luck!!!!

Either you do or you don't. Make up your mind. Once that is done, don't use Alt+Ctrl+Del there is no need for it.

init0 is also not the correct way to shut down linux boxes.

I stopped using it the moment you told me not to.

So the reason my tray does not open is because of a bug in Ubuntu 8.10 Live Disc.

I was just in the middle of downloading BT4-R1 to see if it might eject the disc properly but I suspect it will likely have the same problem. Answer: it does have the same problem.

Thank you and thanks to everyone who replied to my thread.

Note: There is a long delay between when I post and when the post appears. I wonder how long this delay will persist?
