are you using the gui?
if so, have you set the correct type?
ie hex, passphrase, shared/restriced
I'm having the exact same problem... I did get an error message saying to check the error log when I first started wicd also... I can't find a file browser either so I can check /usr/bin/ either, but that might tell us more...
Did you all started the network? start > services > network > start network, then you open widc..
My good friend who suggested changing it to hex, forgive me for disregarding your post at first.
I'm now connected. Try changing it from WPA 1/2 passphrase to WEP hex or each of the other options. Even though I thought it was a WPA 2, apparently this is what was needed to connect.

Make sure your networking service has started before trying to connect to a network. I had the exact same problem until I realized that you had to turn on networking - it's an easy mistake to make.
Very simple:
Open a Terminal, up a daemon (wicd) and:
# wicd
and "Backtrack Dragon"->"Internet"->"Wicd"
