    alright im trying to install backtrack 2 to a 40GB hard drive.. It going to be the only os on the drive... i created 3 partitions /dev/hda1 which is ext3 and the size is 64M... the second is /dev/hda2 linux-swap and thats 1GB .. the last is /dev/hda3 ext3 which is 12GB....
    When i boot the computer without the cd i get an error reading "Error Loading Operating System"... This is my lilo.conf

    # LILO configuration file
    # generated by 'liloconfig'
    #
    # Start LILO global section
    lba32 # Allow booting past 1024th cylinder with a recent BIOS
    boot = /dev/hda
    # message = /boot/boot_message.txt
    prompt
    timeout = 1200
    reset
    # VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
    vga = 791
    # End LILO global section

    # Linux bootable partition config begins
    image = /boot/vmlinuz
    root = /dev/hda3
    label = Linux
    # Linux bootable partition config ends

    and this is what i get when i do "lilo -v"

    bt ~ # lilo -v

    This has been covered many times. If your just wanting BT installed, try the easy way. Format your whole hdd, boot back into your live CD and follow these commands.

    umount /mnt/hda1
    fdisk /dev/hda
    command :d 1
    command: n
    command: p
    partition number (1-4): 1
    then hit enter 2 more time
    command: w
    command:clear
    command: mke2fs /dev/hda1
    command:mkdir /mnt/backtrack
    command: mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/backtrack/
    now select the BackTrack Installer located in menu\Backtrack\Miscellaneous\backtrack installer
    leave everything the same besides click Real (2700 mb requiered) option then install.
    it takes forever to install so relax for about 20-30 min
    when done click close and reboot your machine.
    DONE AND DUSTED!!!!!!!

    Default Spent Days trying to resolve this same issue.

    Can anyone provide some assistance concerning this error message when trying lilo -v? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    This is a lilo question that would be best searched for at the lilo website.

    the error is because you probably have a sda drive and you neglected to change lilo to reflect that. did you create the file systems aand mount the directories? if so was it sda or hda. More importantly did you chroot into your install to edit lilo or are you editing the live cd. If so you will get the same error because the cd is read-only

    try this
    boot the livecd and open a shell konsole.
    type chroot /mnt/backtrack/ /bin/bash
    then type nano /etc/lilo.conf

    edit lilo,save it and type lilo -v
    see if that helps any.

    my guess is the same as purehate. what i just typed above is what you should try.
