The operating system on your computer/laptop should already have formating tools available.
If not then you should look for one to download and follow it's documentation.

but I could not get access to cryptsetup -y --cipher aes-xts-plain --key-size 512 luksFormat /dev/sda5
OR
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 pvcrypt
anyway, I unplugged my usb thumb drive and now it is encrypted.. I can't find it, and I'm looking for help on how I can format it.
