Monitor Mode

While running backtrack2, I cannot get monitor mode to work for any program, from airodump to kismet. I am running an acer aspire 5100 with an atheros ar5005g wireless chipset. I have googled around, but haven't found an answer, so if somebody could either point me in the right direction, or help me out, it would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Just some more information;

the card can associate with an AP as well as connect to the internet perfectly at the speeds I should be, it simply won't go into monitor mode.

give this a try....... airmon-ng start wifi0
