Why do you need nessus client ? the web interface is pretty cool.

Do not read the Wiki, most your questions will not be answered there !
Do not take a look at the: Forum Rules !
That article is a little outdated:
1) download Tenable Network Security (Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04 (32 bits): Nessus-4.2.2-ubuntu810_i386.deb)
2) dpkg -i Nessus-4.2.2-ubuntu810_i386.deb
3) # /opt/nessus/sbin/nessus-adduser
4) get register key from Nessus
5) # /opt/nessus/bin/nessus-fetch --register XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
6) # /etc/init.d/nessusd start
7) open browser and enter https://yourip:8843
I think that does it, hopefully I didn't miss a step
actually, beware of NoScript blocking the interface, etc.
look here for the complete rundown:

Sounds like you need to create a user account. It's required prior to logging into Nessus. Newly updated Nessus uses a web interface as the client.
I would like to use OpenVAS but I'm having issues with it.
I have done the makecert, the adduser & the sync.
The client loads up fine, but when i goto connect, it just locks up and eventually i have to terminate the process.
Anyone know what I could be doing wrong? I'm using the "Start Scanner" option, before I try to login with the client. I have intentionally typed in the wrong password to see if it would still lock up, but it knows the password is wrong, so I am assuming the Start Scanner is the Server?
I have only seen one tutorial on Openvas and I think it's for a different version because I see no "start server" on BT4 R1.
With the latest nessus Version 4.2.2 and the feed type (Home)-
after you
/opt/nessus/sbin/nessus-adduser
I usually stop it from starting automatically:
/usr/sbin/update-rc.d -f nessusd remove
If you haven't already get your feedcode by registering
Tenable Network Security
I update the plugins:
/opt/nessus/bin/nessus-fetch --register <your feed code here>
When I'm ready to nessus just:
/etc/init.d/nessusd start
Then just browse to:
https://localhost:8834/
At this point you are good to go... no more client or anything needed anymore.![]()
