Default unable to join wep network manually...

I'm unable to connect to my wep network... here are the commands I'm using

    ifconfig wlan0 down
    iwconfig wlan0 mode managed
    iwconfig wlan0 key XXXXXXX
    iwconfig wlan0 essid MYNET
    iwconfig wlan0 channel 6
    dhclient wlan0

then it goes trying to contack dhcp but after a few tries, no dhcp responded to request. I know it works because I'm able to connect from my windows box... any help appreciated

    thanks

    have you tried using wicd?

if you are using the console try putting "iwconfig wlan0 up" before the last command

Do you ever ifconfig wlan0 up? That should happen before the dhclient, I believe.

Also, could please post a full log of this including the format of your key (did you use colons?) and the output of each command.

Also, did you try to assign yourself an IP address manually, adding a default gateway and pinging it?

In same boat. And worst thing is, I managed to fix it and then when I rebooted from USB live I couldn't remember what I did last time.

It's to do with AP association. I've scrambled through all my web histories trying to find what I did last time but I ****ing can't find it.

I got Wicd recognising all local wifis, everything. Then I rebooted without making an note of what I'd done.

Would you PLEASE send me a PM if you get a solution to this.

I get that it's all free and that no one owns the stuff, blah blah, but you think by now someone would write a simple guide to AP association which a complete linux noob can follow. The stuff I've seen always starts with stuff a martian wouldn't be able to follow.

when you type iwconfig do you see by your wlan0 "AP not associated" even after trying the below??

    ifconfig wlan0 down
    iwconfig wlan0 mode managed
    iwconfig wlan0 key XXXXXXX
    iwconfig wlan0 essid MYNET
    iwconfig wlan0 channel 6
    dhclient wlan0

Connecting to an access point is the same in BT many other Linux distros.
Each of the above commands also has a man page. Now would be a good time to learn them.
See also the how-to section and the link below in regards to being new.
