openvas howto

please could some kind person point me to a basic starting point/ howto guide to openvas.
running BT4-r1 - openvas server and database running running and I have added a user.
I go to client use scan assist. Connect to OpenVAS server - Authentication password entered -
Problem "could Not open a connection to loacalhost" even entering valid ip address on local network as the target.
/etc/init.d/apache2 status returns - Apache is running (pid 20303)
I did get it to start once, can't remember sequence of events as it crashed the computer and had to power off as the only way out.
any pointers would be appreciated.

I did two tutorial videos on using openvas. Check my here on the forums in the tutorial sections or my blog.
There are also many more on google. Just try searching a bit. It's better and easier than waiting for an answer.
