Has backtrack worked for your laptop in the past? Does your normal OS work correctly with this LAN port when you don't boot backtrack? What is the exact error message you get? Normally Linux doesn't say "no cable attached."
I was testing BT 4 RC1.
I have booted from the DVD and started X then I tried Gerix Cracker and enabled the monitoring, while Gerix somehow was not working I rebooted the laptop.
Now my lan nic always says that there is no cable attaced, but it is.
I have a Dell Vostro 3700, with Realtek 8167 LAN and a Dell DW1520 WLAN card.

If the time stamp for my post is less than 15 minutes old, hold off on the flamethrower, there's a pretty decent chance I'm going to change it.
Deactivating WOL, and reactivating WOL, solved the problem.
