back track windows manager issue in root

Hiya,

I'm having a weird problem where on the desktop splash screen, it hangs on "Loading windows manager..." for 2 seconds and then it disappears. The effects of this is that every window that pops up is missing the menu bars/options. Also, my tint2 tray does not load up either.

So with this, I can't minimize or maximize or close applications (unless i f12 and do a killall command, and even yakuake doesn't have its "always on top" priviledges)

Note that this ONLY happens using a root login then startx. on a regular user login via kdm everything is okay.

any help/suggestions? I've tried to un-install and re-install the nvidia drivers.

hmm i'll try that.

I've already tried re-installing nvidia drivers, looking at the xorg file. moving my xinitrc to ~/

i'll try renaming those folders when i get home!

be sure to update the thread and let us know if it worked. that way, others that have the issue will get good search results (at least, when they search)

if it was for all users, i'd try abandoning the nvidia drivers altogether and force vesa, by uninstalling all drivers and reconfiguring x (or mod'ing xorg.conf)...just to see if it worked.

since it is just one user (root), it sounds more like your kde settings are hosed. perhaps if you renamed ~/.kde, .kde3, .kderc and then restarted X you might get a clean slate?

Funny thing, I went home, turned laptop on and everything was fine.

But it didn't automagically turn out okay. I did a install of the kde last night, I see the difference by the massive amounts of programs that appeared on my menu screen.

Gonna try to remove kde and try again.

what's the default windows manager in backtrack anyways?

--I might just re-install and test doing an encrypted partition install and try again anyways. This laptop's just for testing the environment before I get one for the real thing.

kde3 is the WM for BT. before you ask, no... you shouldn't update to kde4.
hope it works out...
