Help with USB Key setup

Good Morning

i'm getting an error when trying to boot from my USB key with backtrack on it

the error message is


"No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!"

i have a 32gb usb key and i followed the following instructions from a windows XP box

1.Plug in your USB Drive (Minimum USB Drive capacity 2 GB)
2.Format the USB drive to FAT32
3.Download Unetbootin from UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads
4.Start Unetbootin and select diskimage (use the backtrack-final ISO)
5.Select your USB drive and click “OK” for creating a bootable BackTrack USB drive


i tried it multiple times and i still get the same error
i checked MD5SUM and it's good the download was good

what could be causing the error??
how can i fix it so i can boot from the USB Key?

Thanks for the info macphail, much appriciated
but the solution has to be windows compatible, i don't have a linux box right now, and my cd burner is dead

is there another windows tool to create a bootable USB
i tried the Universal-USB-Installer-v1.7.9.exe but it does not seem to be able to see the ISO file i downloaded , i originally thought it might be my download, but i tried 3 times, and it won't see it.

i have windows and not linux so i could not use the tool

but i did use a windows tool called Universal-USB-Installer
the problem with it is that it would not see my ISO, but i figured it out

it had a problem with the r1

so i just renamed my bt4-r1.iso to bt4-final.iso and it was able to read it and install it on my USB

it booted fine and at the command prompt i typed startx and everything looked good

i have to do more reading because i was not able to get it to detect my d-link wireless card.

and i need to read on how to use the tools available

wow. i love that part. i think you just became a poster child on how things are supposed to work around here. not only did you troubleshoot your own issue and solve it, but now you are off to research your other issues before asking for help.


there are a lot of wireless card issue threads around here, you should have no trouble finding solutions to try. there are also a ton of resources on the tools (most have their own URLs as well...)

You can use the live usb their is a option how much MB you want to use for the persistence it done automatically works well simple and no hassle try it out its free search google for the download link.

Good job on resolving your own issue. On a side note, i did use unetbooting to write BT 4 R1 to my 8 gig sandisk cruzer and everything worked fine

i got my card working, so now everything is up and running, and i'm able to see what's around me.

now i just have to find the guides for all the tools that are available in backtrack

i'm new to this, so it might take me a bit of time, a lot of tools to test and play with

do you guys recommend any spot to start with to learn the tools in backtrack menu section?

personal favorite: metasploit.
Metasploit Unleashed - Mastering the Framework

but it depends on your focus. i do a lot of pen-test/ V.A. work, so this tool helps me automate a lot of tests so i can get more done...
