Default Having trouble getting my network card running. Please help

Well if you can't figure it out I am new to back track. I had been doing some research and I new that bt4 wouldn't work with my on-board wireless card in my laptop so I got a usb network adapter. I am borrowing it and it's one of them wireless n from netgear and it's a wn111 v2 and I am not getting it to where I can find my network so I can connect. Just to add in there I am running bt4 from a usb so me and a friend can try it so we don't have to install it. I do know it will come up as ath0 and I got the network manger wcid come up on bt4 but it will not show the wireless networks or run the adapter. So I m just asking for help here I hope I provided enough information as well.

    Thanks in advanced

I would recommend Google in this one, and it seems this might be what you're looking for:

Search terms: backtrack netgear wn 111
    http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forum...r-working.html

If that doesn't work, post back and we'll have another look at it. For example, it might be handy to know what you've tried to do to get it running, and then mainly what you did on command line.

    Try running the command ...

    start-network

...it should say something about wicd, then wicd should be able to pick up the nearby networks.

Okay - so you at least determined that your onboard NIC is not compatible with BT 4. Unfortunately, setting up and using a wireless adapter should be something that you use a search engine and figure out - however painful this might be, this is part of the learning process. There is a sticky in this forum with a bunch of links to a bunch of resources however, I have some time today so...

The following "hints" (in no particular order) should help you resolve this on your own:

    1. Search engine - you should get something like this which may or may not help:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WiFiHowTo

    2. /var/log/dmesg

    3. lspci

    4. lsmod

    5. iwconfig

    6. ifconfig

    7. /etc/init.d/networking start

    8. wicd

    9. startx

It sounds like BT 4 is loading your NIC but it is not "on". Hope this helps.
