    Unhappy Restoring firefox bookmarks.

My BT installation crashed during hibernate. On rebooting it showed a zillion dangling references so I ran fsck which lead to a major screw up..

Amongst other things that I tried, I cleaned the cache, restored the original lists and did apt-get update && upgrade. The resulting installation was still unsatisfactory - what was worse was that it "upgraded" firefox to I-don't-know-what cleaning out all my bookmarks (which held links to a lot of useful sites I browsed earlier..). Also knocked out the flash player - all attempts to reinstall it through apt-get install adobe-flashplayer run into trouble - saying it can't find the package..

Now I'm left with only one choice - a clean re-installation and then upgrading. The problem before I do that is I would really like to somehow restore my original book marks and take their backup.

Can anybody help me with that?!

Also, is there an equivalent of "system restore" for BT - so I can go back to my original packages in case something goes wrong with it?!

    Start here:
Mozilla Firefox Bookmarks - Ubuntu Forums
Look in the directory mentioned to see if your Bookmarks are still there. Otherwise you are probably out of luck.
As for a BT system restore no there is none and further proof of why we tell people not to use BT as a primary everyday OS.

Got it! It seems Firefox takes auto-backups of bookmarks every time something changes. Simply restored it back to the last auto-backup.
    Thanks a ton mate!

Well! I'm sure you guys must be having your own reasons for doing this: using BT for mundane business could potentially turn the pentesters into victims..!
But maintaining multiple Linux distros on a single machine is often somewhat cumbersome.. Maybe for the sake of us lazy bums you guys could add it as some sort of an optional module..!

Well it's linux so there are many ways in which one can make a backup.
For instance you could make a script that runs tar at shutdown to tar up and export this tarball to a usb stick.
Then make an icon on the desktop that you would hit instead of shutdown, the script runs and then proceeds to shut down the system.
    Another way is using cp
    # cp -a /directories/to/backup /directory/where/to/save/backup.
Again there are many ways to do it some better than others some probably quicker as well.
Go through this search for more info.
    Google
