We do not support virtual box however that does not mean you can't get a vbox up and running. Others have done so.
As for which one to use, use the one you feel most comfortable with.
I notice that in the downloads area there's a vm image for vmware, what about virtualbox? Should I use the Final Release or convert the vmdk of the vmware image to vdi?

I have run both. Personally, and some here differ which is OK, I have great experiences with VM Workstation. Ran VM player for awhile but I like the extra bells and whistles with Workstation. I am using a 64 bit host OS and frankly I didn't like VirtualBox when using it with my host OS. Maybe it would have run differently on a 32 bit host. Can't answer that one for you.
I haven't tried vm player on linux, I did used it on win and I was pretty happy with it. But I installed virtualbox on linux because I already had it downloaded, I guess I should try vm player on linux. What I like about virtualbox is that its free.

I think vmdk to vdi can also be done without qemu, using vditool from virtualbox, not sure but I think I read a tutorial somewhere that used only vditool
