Default Nvidia driver NOT working, failed to start X session

    Hi,

I tried to install the Nvidia drivers on my Samsung R580 laptop: the video card is a GT330M.
    I ran:
    Code:
    apt-get install nvidia-driver
then reboot (not sure if really needed) and typed:
    Code:
    startx
but it didn't work. Here is the Xorg.0.log file:
    Code:

    You can also try nvidia-xconfig

I did it, but the only effect was to generate the attached xorg.conf file, which did not fix it.

At the end I was forced to upgrade to R1 Development release, as I also had issues with both ethernet (Marvell Tech not recognized, no eth0 device) and wireless card (Atheros AR9285 not working with ath9k drivers).

Then I downloaded the latest drivers (version 256.35) from the Nvidia site and tried with:
    Code:
    sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.35.run
but the installer complains about the kernel source:
    Code:
    nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'

I installed both 2.6.34 kernel headers and source, so what's wrong with them, now?
    Many thx.

Did you try what is listed above in the second error section, in regards to kernel sources?

Do you mean the README on the Nvidia site? Of course, I read carefully through the Common Problems section, and the only relevant information I found is:
These problems are generally caused by the build using the wrong kernel header files (i.e. header files for a different kernel version than the one you are running). The convention used to be that kernel header files should be stored in /usr/include/linux/, but that is deprecated in favor of /lib/modules/RELEASE/build/include (where RELEASE is the result of uname -r. The nvidia-installer should be able to determine the location on your system; however, if you encounter a problem you can force the build to use certain header files by using the --kernel-include-dir option. For this to work you will of course need the appropriate kernel header files installed on your system. Consult the documentation that came with your distribution; some distributions do not install the kernel header files by default, or they install headers that do not coincide properly with the kernel you are running.
The --kernel-include-path option is now deprecated, so I tried setting the --kernel-source-path option to both /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.34 and /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.34, but with no luck.
The /lib/modules/2.6.34/build directory symlinks to /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.34, I also tried changing it to /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.34, but then I got a different error message about a missing version.h file.

If you are still having issues with this I am glad to help you fix it but we need to do it on IRC. Ping me if I can help on #backtrack-linux on the Freenode network. I actually have a deb built for the newest kernel and I could use a tester or two

No I meant : Did you try what is listed above in the second error section, in regards to kernel sources?
Above in your code box there are two error sections. I am talking about what is in the second one. Last paragraph.
Failing that it may be wise to try working with the .deb that purehate has offered.

Default Riferimento: Nvidia driver NOT working, failed to start X session

@purehate: thank you for your offer of help! Unfortunately, on the corporate LAN where I am now it is not allowed to access any chat/messaging service like IRC...

In any case, the error section regarding kernel sources does mention the SYSSRC environment variable or the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option (--kernel-source-path). I actually used the latter, which did not work at first.

As the kernel sources did not seem properly configured and some header files were reported as missing, my first (stupid) idea was doing a kernel compilation. Thereafter, I actually managed to install the Nvidia drivers (without need to install the generated kernel image and headers .deb files), but I tend to consider it just a workaround rather than a solution, as I am quite confident there should be a much simpler and smarter way to do it, than recompiling the kernel each time one wants to update the video drivers... Sorry, but I am quite newbie about kernel configuration and compilation!

Generally recompiling and or messing with the kernel is something we tend to shy away from, since it will generally break other packages.
    However YMMV.
Funny while stumbling around the ubuntu forums I found a link back to here on this card.
    http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forum...0m-driver.html
For more troubleshooting key words try this one (EDID) as well as card info and ubuntu .

Default Riferimento: Nvidia driver NOT working, failed to start X session

I actually came across that thread before opening this one, but it didn't seem relevant to installation issues, as the EDID patch has to be applied after a successful installation.

Furthermore, I was a bit confused as the first post, which is dated 03-31, refers to versions of the Nvidia drivers that were known as not supporting the 300M series, while both 195.36.15 and 256.35 do include support for my 330M card.
The amazing thing is that I also have a Kubuntu 10.04 partition on the same laptop, and both drivers versions work flawlessy on that system!

Having said that, I know I shouldn't mess with kernel sources but I still don't understand why the drivers can't be installed with the kernel headers only. I've read through a number of tutorials (most addressing Ubuntu and derived distros) and none indicates the kernel sources package as required, once you have properly configured kernel headers.

After further investigation (thanks to mlord from nvnews forum) it turned out that the file: /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.34/include/config/modversions.h is missing, as well as the mtrr subdirectory, though I don't really know if that may be related to this issue.
