Exclamation My first oh $#!7 moment in quite a while...

So I was using dd ....
    I typoed...

How do I find out what the first x bytes on disk contain?

I would like to restore just those bytes from an earlier backup image.

Ouch! You might need to just restore the whole disk. I'm not sure you can see what was there from a backup.
Of course, if you really wanted to have some fun, go to Wal-Mart late at night and ask the greeter if they could help you find trashbags, roll of carpet, rope, quicklime, clorox and a shovel. See if they give you any strange looks. --Streaker69

I will have to reinstall. My backup is corrupted also. <sad face />

thankfully, it is still running, and I can backup /home and /opt .
cp and mount apparently weren't affected.

Open Source and Linux Forums will be a more suitable place to ask such a question.
