Default SEND L3 ERROR with ettercap

    Hey guys,
i'm posting this after reading everything google had to offer.
I keep getting an error in ettercap -
SEND L3 ERROR: 1298 byte packet (0800:06) destined to xxx.xxx.xx.xxx was not forwarded (libnet_write_raw_ipv4(): -1 bytes written (Message too long)

i've edited the etter.conf file and uncommented iptables.
tried with both command line and -G
Also made sure i'm running ettercap as root.

Keep getting the same error, any ideas?
This is being used in a home network with 2 laptops connected via wireless, one running BT 4 final and the other runnin XP.

thanks in advance for any help.

did you make sure to have ip forwarding switched on?
    make sure you include
    Code:
    echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

I also have had the same problem as you, and I have not been able to solve it. So if you manage to get it working, please post the solution in this thread.

I was running BT4 with an Intel wifi card on my attack machine and an Ahteros wifi card on the target machine, with an Apple airport extreme as gateway.

I thought the Airport extreme caused the problem. Can you post the hardware specs of the gateway, the attacking machine and the target machine please?

What feature of the plan to use ettercap? What you edited in etter.conf?
To find out if you're in the wrong configuration or not.

did you make sure to have ip forwarding switched on?
    make sure you include
    Code:

    echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
Found that the friend said above?
    Sorry bad english!

    Thanks for your reply.
gunrunr, i have also made sure ip forwarding is on with echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

As far as hardware goes, the attacking machine is a lenovo t400 laptop (intel card)
The victim is another Toshiba laptop i have with xp running.

i get the same error when running ettercap on my MBP (BT4 on VM fusion)

Show us what exactly you're doing, can it be? You may be wrong the syntax of the commands, etc... We can not guess!

Thanks, for your reply and the links, i'm familiar with sniffing methods using ettercap.

As stated above, i have uncommented iptables in etter.conf, made sure ip forwarding is on with echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward, launched ettercap as root, scanned for hosts, added them to targets 1 and 2 (tried both ways with gateway and target), still got the SEND L3 ERROR.
