lets say your host is ubuntu, and you have vmware workstation with backtrack as guest.
wouldn't it be possible to have airserv-ng [Aircrack-ng] running in ubuntu and then for example use airodump-ng 192.168.198.1:1337 in backtrack?

hi,
vmware has is own hardware abstraction layer and not 'natively' accessing your hardware - it's
just simulating basic hardware components.
Two leverage the most out of your wireless LAN environment, I'd recommend always buying a
compatible USB WLAN card - there are tons of recommendations in the forum. Also a good
ressource is the aircrack website itself: http://aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=c...st_card_to_buy
Maybe you don't know, but unfortunately there are still 2 forums active for backtrack and you have
two search in the other one as well, which still have the most comprehensive answers & guidelines:
Remote Exploit Forums - Home of BackTrack

yes i know that vmware cant directly connect to a pci card.
but the reason for this thread was not a simple 'can i use my pci wireless card with vmware?' question
thank you, but i already know about the older forum..for about 2 years now.
read my post again,
basically let airserv-ng on the host running which actually controls the card and connect to it within the virtualization software via airodump.

Ok, maybe muts wasn't feeling like explaining, so I'll do it for him.
VMware will ONLY (Pay attention to the next word) Recognize USB wireless cards as wireless cards. So even if you could use airserv-ng and share the PCI card between the two systems (Ubuntu and VMBacktrack), VMware wouldn't be able to recognize it anyway, and airodump wouldn't know how to handle it.
Besides all that, if one has Ubuntu installed (and aircrack-ng suite), why not just use aircrack it in Ubuntu?
