A program to track MAC addresses??

Hi all, recently somebody broke into my brother's apartment and stole my laptop. I live in a small city, and I suspect the person who stole it lives in the same apartment complex.
The only thing I have left is the MAC address and serial number of my laptop that was stolen. So when I use airodump or kismac to look at the routers and clients, I can see the majority of MAC addresses in the neighborhood.
My question is are there any good programs out there that are very accurate at locating the distance between clients? In airodump (on an Acer Aspire One) I can see all the clients on one screen but the problem is that the "Power" column does not accurately display the distance between my Acer and the client.
I would really appreciate any help out there from you guys. I already filed a police report so that it can't be pawned, and I am checking my local craigslist everyday to make sure it's not on there. The reason why I really need this laptop is that it has all my personal information on it, and everything that I backed up is on an external HDD and that was taken also.

I doubt you are going to get much help in this subject,
However kismet could be used to "track" the wireless client given that it is within range of the card kismet is using.
The chances of this happening are probably slim at best.
As you have stated filing a police report and watching local ads is about the best you can hope for. Course if you have connections to the mob they may also be of service but that again is out of our ability to help.

If the laptop is on a network close to you then why not hack it? Chances are this guy is dumb as baboon with down's syndrome. Hack it, then get all the information you can on this guy, email adresses, passwords, bank accounts, friends, family. Enough to identify the guy then report it the the cops. All he would have to do is sign up for one website that asks for his name and you got him.

Pretty dubious suggestion from a legal standpoint. The laptop could have been onsold in which case you would be hacking some innocent person. You could also be guilty of violating various interception laws, or of hacking third party systems depending on what the person was accessing and what type of monitoring you were doing. That might become a problem when you try and explain to the Police how you found the guy....
