Default Direct Rendering Not Working / GLX Error

    Hi Newbie here,

I am having a problem trying to get direct rendering to work.
Here are the outputs of the following:

    Code:
    root@bt:~# glxinfo
    Segmentation fault
    Code:
    root@bt:~# glxinfo |grep rendering
    root@bt:~#
I get absolutely nothing here... whereas before I was getting Error: glXCreateContext failed.
After removing and reinstalling nvidia-driver a couple of times (a lot actually), I now get no output on that command. ?

I have a Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 card and installed its driver by issuing
    Code:
    # apt-get install nvidia-driver
    # nvidia-xconfig
I've performed all suggestions and changes to my xorg.conf file from Purehate & Monovitae from this previous post with no avail:
    [HTML]http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forums/old-backtrack-4-pre-final/19949-var-log-xorg-0-log-nvidia-glx-error.html[/HTML
]I've read in the Ubuntu forums as well that many have experienced this issue and have solved tit with a simple removal of the nvidia driver <apt-get remove --purge nvidia*> and by reinstalling it. That also hasn't worked in my case.

I have attached the output of my xorg.conf and errors & warning from my Xorg.0.log for your review.

Thank you for taking the time to read and/or help!

    Regards,

P.S. - I also am not able to run the Nvidia X Server Settings from K menu/System
P.P.S - I also have Compiz installed. Reason why I need direct rendering to work...

Purge the bt's driver and install nvidia's one.

BTW I don't even understand why you want DR on a distro you wouldn't use everyday.

Thank you. Installing Nvidia's driver solved my direct rendering issue. I followed
xX_Spiidey_Xx 's nvidia tutorial without any issues.

Back Track IS my primary OS. I am more disciplined using BT on a daily basis.

Yeah I understand... You've got to audit your network everyday and try cracking your wep/windows/etc. password everyday to be sure it didn't change...
Seriously... If you are a BT user, you must know a bit about security and GNU/Linux... But really !

Well, if you want to use a jigsaw to drive in a nail, you can, but it's not exactly its purpose...

This is not really the kind of attitude I want to endorse on these forums. We are here to help each other and learn, not make fun of each other and ridicule them. Consider this your only warning.

    As you wish...
My purpose was not to ridicule nor laugh at him. I DO believe BT shouldn't be used as an everyday OS for some reasons. And each time one asks for a newer version of [put any program here], each time one says an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade broke the OS, I get more and more convinced BT cannot be used like any other OS.

But well, I'm not sure helping people do anything without warning them is actually "being helpful"... I could have said
"Gosh ! I am a bit prone to think your choice might not be the best one since you would certainly not use those tools every day and the system is not maintained like any other OS. :-p Nevertheless, I'm not in your shoes ;-) and you can do anything you can as long as it's legal. Have a good day "
    But I'm not like that.

So let's say it again : if you want to use a jigsaw to drive in a nail, you can, but it's not exactly its purpose... (find it far more poetic)

I will eventually use that tune again. So you can delete my account/ban me right now if you wish.

You're responding to a 2 week old thread. Also the OP did a good job of posting the errors recieved and showed at least an effort in finding the solution to their issue by searching the web and BT forums. Whether or not Backtrack should be used as an everyday operating system will be in debate for most people, but if this is how they chose to learn then nothing you or anyone else says will change that.

You were out of line, just take it and learn from it and walk away. There's no point in digging yourself a bigger hole.
