i used partition magic to downsize the xp partition. Then made a 3gig linux main partition and a linx swap partition 1.5 gig. I didnt format them just created them. Then i loaded linux live cd Auditor and used qpart to format the main linux partition ready to accept the install of backtrack.

You could just use qpart for all of it, but its new to me and didnt want to messup my windows install. Have a readup on qpart and the formats for linux.

    Question

I have a Fedora and WinXP installation, and a primary partition set aside for backtrack. I'd like to keep grub and not use lilo. Supposing that my backtrack install would be on /dev/sda4, then what could I write into menu.lst. Could it be this:

    title Backtrack / Whax
    root (hd0,3)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz rw root=/dev/sda4

    Cheers, z

I've got a P133 notebook I'd like to install to, but it doesnt boot
from the cdrom. Is there any way to install it to the HD after I
boot from a floppy, eg boot to a DOS disk with the cd drivers, and
then load a kernal from the cdrom?

    Talking Thank god . . .

. . . For people who come and post such useful tips. Was worried i scrapped my windows install since i know next to squat about the inner workings of linux (so far).

Cjack, what do you mean it doesnt boot from CD? It doesn't have one? Its broken? ??? If it does have one have you tried to edit the BIOS options or get to the boot menu? Fill us in here.

also also: About the partition magic/linux questions before, the format for the linux main part would be EXT2 (preferably) EXT3 might not work. Partition magic will do it all for you.

EXT3 works all the time with qtparted or or gparted.

Yes there is a way. You boot from the floppy with the cd drivers. This assigns a drive letter to your CD rom, lets say its D:

    Then you just :

    Code:
    d:
    cd boot
    cd dos
    linux
it runs the linux.bat which run loadlin (sort of boot loaded in DOS) and it will run the linux distro for you. After it the system boots up, you can do xconf, then startx to get to the X windows and start the Backtrack hdd installation from

    K-Menu->Backtrack->Misc->BackTrack Installer

You can search the forum if you're having problems with the gui installer, its covered in quite a few posts.
