    Default crunch 2.4

I am pleased to announce the release of crunch 2.4 which fixes a few small bugs found by fellow forum member TAPE.

    Changes from version 2.3
fix charset.lst to remove some unwanted characters - reported by Tape
fix usage help screen (-m and not -n) - reported by Tape
clarified -b option in help and man file - reported by Tape
fix Makefile to install to /pentest/passwords instead of /pentest/password - reported by Tape
make bytecount behave consistently - reported by Tape
    fixed up copyrights
    include a copy of gpl.txt

If you can't want for the BT developers to release an update you can download and compile the source code from crunch - wordlist generator | Get crunch - wordlist generator at SourceForge.net

As usual if you find any problems please let me know so I can fix them.

    Thanks,

You are welcome. I checked and I took over maintenance of crunch on 11-23-2008. In the last 16 months there have been 14 releases. I did a double take when I saw that. I was too busy having fun adding features to notice. On my todo list is:
    1. add resume support to permute (I am not sure this is possible)
    2. make permute more intelligent (min, max) (I am not sure this is possible either)
    3. make -m support reading from strings from file

The last option shouldn't be too bad in adding. Two might be possible but I haven't thought of a way to do to it yet. One I don't think is possible. I tried adding it when I added resume support for chunk but I ended up with duplicate words in the list. Because of the way permute works permute needs the history of words to prevent duplication. If someone has an idea of how to do this I will listen.

I am very pleased to see your continued support and dev of this tool. I've used it plenty myself.

    Thanks!

crunch is really maturing nicely I would say !

I decided it was time to have a more detailed look at crunch and make a blogpost on it,
when doing so came accross a few quirks, which discussed with bofh28.

Thanks for your time in listening to my ramblings bofh28 and for fixing the small quirks noted.

I hope it is not inappropriate to link to the blogpost here, if so please msg me and I will edit out this post,
however bofh28 thought it may be worthwhile mentioning the review of crunch.

just a question when I do run crunch 2.0 it doesn't use all the cpu power generally 1 core of my 4 core i7.

is this just the way it is?

another question if it can only run using 1 core is it better to have HT on or off?

Crunch only using 1 core is normal. Crunch is a single threaded application. OK TECHNICALLY it has two threads if you use the -z option but the second thread is only for compression. As far as hyterthreading I don't have an answer. Try the following with HT on and off:
    time ./crunch 1 4 -o test
    and post the results.

so did crunch ever get put in the repo?

so I have been playing around some more since I am done school, I found something interesting
when I run crunch with out x server (all comand line no gui/desktop) it was slow.
I then ran it with x server in terminal, it was much faster.
then I proceeded to make the terminal window size smaller, everytime I went smaller it was faster.

Can you please post the results of running the following command inside and outside of X and with the various size terminal windows?
    time ./crunch 1 6 >/dev/null

Running crunch outside of X should be the fastest way to run crunch. I don't have the time to test right now but I will add it to the todo list.
