Welcome to the forum DP - my recommendation is you install BT4 final release persistent to a USB (instructions in the "How To" section), which will enable you to give it a test drive before you decide if BT is for you.
Hey,
Firstly i apologise if someone has asked this before as i have had a look through google and still am a bit confused how to install backtrack.
I want to install backtrack on my laptop, which has windows xp installed on it (no partitions).
I heard about backtrack yesterday and have not used linux before.
I want to use it to try out a tutorial i found to crack WEP but am stuck on how to install it.
I have downloaded backtrack 3 and backtrack 4 iso's and also backtrack 4 vmware as im not sure which one to use.
I do not want to remove or delete any data on my win xp partition. What would be the most suitable way for me to install it (hard drive, usb or cd) and how do i install it to that place?
Thank you for your help!

Or you can use Sun Virtual Box (Free) or VMWare Fusion ($$$) to create a virtual disk image (no repartitioning) where you can run it in a virtual enviornment. The downside to that is you need a usb wifi card for wifi cracking and wifi packet sniffing.
Suggest you installed into VMware or VirtualBox for testing. Just download the bt4final.iso and get one of those virtual machine. I've mine installed under VirtualBox. Have fun.
This was very helpful for me.![]()
