Question airodump-ng not finding all wireless networks

Hi all, just wondering if somebody could help me. I've got a D-Link DWA-140 USB wireless adapter which seems to work fine apart from airodump-ng not showing 70% of networks that I KNOW are there. For example, If I plug my device into a Windows machine (exact same location) I can find around 10-11 networks, however when plugged into BackTrack I can only find 3 and it seems to be the same ones all the time. The device must be working because I can join networks, etc.

I am running BackTrack in VMWare Workstation 7 on Windows 7. 'lspci' doesn't show the adapter anywhere but 'airmon-ng' shows the correct adapter "ra0 Ralink 2560 PCI rt2500".

    Any ideas?

Just an idea, but I have noticed that windows often shows many networks that are in fact to far away to actually connect to. In other words, it receives a beacon from the AP, but cannot actually communicate with it. Airodump could only show networks that it is actually able to monitor. I would have thought that airodump would show the network regardless, but maybe not. I'm just speculating here.

Hi mixit, thanks for your reply.

I thought this too but I have a wireless access point in the room next to me which gets full signal strength in Windows but it doesn't even appear in BackTrack. There are 3 more that have ~40% signal strength in Windows but don't appear in BackTrack. I've created a live CD to eliminate my VM but it still does the same.

'iwlist ra0 scan' returns "ra0: Interface doesn't support scanning" - driver related..?

'iwlist ra0 scan' returns "ra0: Interface doesn't support scanning" ?????? did you post whole message?
Shouldn't it look somehow like this,, ra0: Interface doesn't support scanning : network is down ,, ?
If i am right get that card up.Then it will scan.

When my adapter is in monitor mode with airmon "iwlist ra0 scan" returns:

ra0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Invalid argument

and when it is not in monitoring mode:

    ra0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

I'm going to assume it's driver related. I'm using rt2870sta, anybody had any success with this?

Hmm, I've just tried it in BackTrack 3 and it works fine. Interestingly a util such as rutilt finds all wireless networks but airodump does not?

It has to be driver related but I've tried 3 different ones now and still can't get it to work!
