Upgrading the Ubuntu within Backtrack?

Hey,
I fighted a bit to get my WLAN working on my Asus eeePC 1001P. I found this guide, which helped on my desktop OS, Ubuntu Karmic, as well as on my Backtrack installation:

However, with the new kernel, Backtracks startx fails. I see some colored action, I suspect the X server does start, some white pixels move when I move the touchpad mouse, but it's a lot like those old pay porn TV channels.

Weirdly, Ctrl+Alt+F6 fails too. I switch to a totally black screen, and Ctrl+F7 switches back to my weird X.
It's been a long time since I manually configured an X server (I don't even remember if it's Xorg or that other thing), but didn't I have some file to edit?
Or maybe the problem is somewhere else - no idea.

Hey,
I sense that my wireless problems will be solved with Apr 29ths Ubuntu Lucid release.
Would it be possible to retain my Backtrack installation, but upgrade the "subjacent" Ubuntu?
If so, can I use a guide from a Ubuntu website without breaking some Backtrack-specific stuff?

No you can't upgrade the Ubuntu part of Backtrack without breaking Backtrack.

If you re-compile/update the kernel, you do so at your own risk. The forum really won't be able to offer support. As you've found out it can and most likely will break BackTrack.

Well, it didn't "break BackTrack", but screwed with my X config file, I guess. Anyway, installing the MadWifi-driver after this manual:
WLAN/MadWifi
(sorry, German) worked well. Here is the page to download (I used the link to "use this snapshot"):
