Use the Ubuntu LTS Lucid as the base for next Backtrack

For the next version of Backtrack consider using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx LTS Version as the base.

The advantage for the developer is a base that will be supported for three years on the desktop. Backtrack Desktop users will be able to use Ubuntu and Backports for other software so they have up to date productivity and recreation tools in addition to Backtrack's state of the art security software.

Intrepid is a bit long in the tooth.

Im sure they will, 8.10 was only a few months old when they released BT4 beta.

Its been discussed in other threads, and i'm doing some testing with the betas waiting for the KDE3 final to be out. The problem is in porting a bunch of the apps, some difficulties with python versions, etc. It should be very do-able though given enough time to recompile and repackage everything.

The other issue is that although the LTS will be supported by Canonical, every time they update their packages, they would need to be tested for compatibility and conflicts with existing BT packages before being added to the BT repo. Just because it works in Ubuntu, doesn't mean it will work in BT(next rev).

Based on what I have read I thought Backtrack 4 was still spun off Intrepid (albeit heavily modified since).

RageLTMan that is a succinct and clearly written explanation of the problems.

Also please leave the MS bashing out. They have their place and Linux has it's. 'Nuff said.
