what language is a good starter to learn?

I just started going to college for Network Security, and the library is extensive (i love it!!) i got a book on perl and am trying to teach myself...my question is whats the best one to play with in your opinion?

My vote is for either perl or python to start with.

Also, if you are going to be working with Windows boxes, learn how to use/make either DOS batch scripts or VB scripts. Not every Windows box can run perl or python natively, but they can run VB or DOS! Saved my bacon many times during pentests.

well if you are new to programming i would recommend python or perl
for windows start with visual basic . dont go with c++ if this is the first language you going to learn .
