you shouldn't thread hijack. Your issue is related to not sharing the USB devices for the guest OS. Read the vmware help files.
BTW, once its shared it should be wlanX.
i have the same issue. first i have installed bt4prefinal.iso in vmware , when I type
ifconfig eth0 up
dhclient eth0
it connects internet but doesn't show me interface name when I use airmon-ng command. the situation is same in BT4 beta vmware image. I'm confused. I'm using usb zyxel g-202 (1211rw) and also have computer's intel3945ABG (I'm closing intel3945ABG when vmware is on)
what can I do ???
and vmware only see my usb connection if the host machine doesn't connect internet.
typing ifconfig and ı see interface "lo"
lo Link encap: Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
typing iwconfig, then appears
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.

Failure to do so will probably get your threads deleted or worse.
Vmware will not share usb connections between your host and virtual machines. If you want to use your usb wifi in vmware I suggest running a wired connection from your nic to your router.
