Does you use BackTrack 4 Final Release or BackTrack 4 Final Release VMWare Image. The later one is already installed.
I am trying to install the BackTrack4 distribution for VMWare.
When I arrive at the BackTrack desktop after running startx I do not see the install.sh script on the desktop. So instead I run ubiquity from a console.
When I get at step 4 of 7, Prepare disk space, I choose Guided - use entire disk, as per the online manual. The ready to install window, step 7 of 7 appears and I press Install.
Next is a messagebox "Failed to unmount partitions", with the text: The installer needs to commit changes to partition tables, but cannot do so because partitions on the following mount points could not be unmounted: /
Please close any application using these mount points.
This is the point where I do not get any further with the install. I am a beginner, so I do need some help here!
Thanks,
Martein

I had a lot of issues installing/running BT4 by mounting the iso. Save yourself the headache, and download the VM image, and place it with your VM's, works out of the box.
First and best thing to do would be to check out the md5sum. There is a faq entry to explain both what it is and how to do it.
I have made several vm's from the iso and the only problems I have had are user generated ones.
As forIf you downloaded the vmware .rar imagine then you don't need to install anything.I am trying to install the BackTrack4 distribution for VMWare.
If you are using the .iso with vmware then you can do and install, but again you need to make sure the md5sum is correct first.

What part of my previous post in this thread is hard to follow??
If you download the pre-made .rar file then you do not need to install anything. Installation is already taken care of.
You just unpack the archive. Then run your virtual machine software and point it to the files that were in the .rar
To be successful here you should read all of the following.
