Technically you're aren't on a network if you're trying to retrieve a wpa/wpa2 key. If you were connected to the network you'd already have the key?

You need airodump to be on the same channel and filtered by the AP MAC to avoid confusion if that's what you mean?

Thanks for the videos by the way! They're very helpful...especially the De-ice ones!

Anyhow, I've just tried to deauth my windows 7 laptop using a vista machine running vmware with BT4 Final and it worked no problem! Using alfa wireless card. So as you say it could well be a particular hardware setup that makes the difference.

Yeah, I tired doing it again last night, I didn't have a problem this time! I'm not sure what was happening when I was doing it last time... hardware/software/drunk?
Saying that...Windows update found a new driver for my WiFi card not that long ago....

I think that the problem is because of the windows 7 as g0tmi1k said but I have no idea why? because I tested another one with vista and it worked and I got the handshake

yes I did reconnect with the windows 7 and did not get the handshake but with vista it worked fine.
and don't worry all this was done in my network

So you disconnected, started sniffing, and then reconnect? Still didn't find it?
Does the target show up in airodump-ng?

Yeah, I've found this too. I haven't found why yet - because too many variables keep changing to pin point why its happening.
I could do it to my desktop, but after moving house (with a new router) it wouldn't work on my laptop. Both have Windows 7.
Ill mess about with some USB WiFi cards between the two and different OS - Just need the time!

You can use the ones which comes with backtrack: /pentest/passwords/wordlists/

When I run airodump-ng I get essid networks but I do not get any station id's (Client Mac).

Any simple reason why?

1.) There is no-one connected
2.) They clients are "idle" (aka no data is being sent)
3.) You're too far away from the clients

I'm not fully sure what you mean. I created a very small wordlist with a few random words, then at the end added my WPA key - so I didn't have to wait hours for it to be cracked.
