Take backups of your machine and just wipe it, far easier to deal with.
    Still not underestimating the power...

    Default Might Help

The issue your experiencing sounds like a similar issue I had a while ago. I also got the 'folder and ?' thing after using Backtrack on my MacBook (cannot remember the exact conditions of why it was happening). Same model, 5,2 but not pro.

At boot I used 'command + s' which forces single user mode. The point of this is the system will start up and display the hardware being detected, services starting etc., similar to when Backtrack starts.

When I did this, I could see that everything was initially loading fine, but got stuck doing some crazy probing (or something like that) for USB devices. It did its thing (for like 20 minutes) then started just like normal!

Anyway, just recommending you try 'command + s' at boot, hopefully might reveal more about whats going on

? What ? Your loosing me.

I tried Installer on a partition this night. It didn't boot. I had no choice but to clean install it. It now runs fine. It's my own laptop but its also my work one. I was loosing too much time trying to figure what happened. But believe me, I hate not to understand, so much !

I told you - first partition causing the issues, thus why an archive and install would have been an acceptable situation.
